For reasons I fail to understand, WMP 12 insists on randomly renaming my MP3s. Well, in the display when they're playing rather than in the folder (I think. I hope.) and I've had enough.

(I've stuck with it as I believe it's the only software that will change the ratings in the folder as well as in the software??)

So, any suggestions for a different media player? It doesn't need to be sophisticated, just to have the ability to create playlists (inc automatic ones based on rating) and - hopefully - have a way of saving the ratings so that when I backup the music files, the ratings will be saved with them and not be stuck in the software on this PC.

VLC is all you ever need, and it will save you a lot of trouble when you encounter media files that Windows Media Player doesn't have the codecs for. It has all the codecs because the creators don't have an agenda, and they're not trying to push their own file format.

The other player I used to use a lot was Winamp, I first started using it in about 1999, before most people had even heard of the MP3 file format!

+1 VLC but only for videos

For music, you can't beat MonkeyMedia - plays, catalogues, tags and pretty much everything else. There's a free version too

Bizarre that folk think this is a codec issue.

I don't think the problem is with WMP, as most media players get track info from id3 tags rather than the file name.

I'm assuming your problem tracks have not come from owned CDs..

They've come from both ripped and downloaded. I think I've solved the problem, though I'm not entirely certain how.

I tried VCL and quickly uninstalled it: we did not get on.
