Strange bike parking, or something.

I go past this from time to time, it's on the road over Dunstable downs.

No footpath adjacent to the road and nothing of note in the immediate area (a few hundred yards up the road there is a visitor centre and cafe). It appears to be a rail to lock bikes to alongside a short section of cycle path. There's a little parking sign, with a bike on it.

Why?

There are actually two of these on the same section of road.

Just a wild guess, looking at the OS there's a few walking tracks in the area is this the entrance to one ? From Street view it doesnt look like it though

Not really my area either (although I often ride up there- it's about 18 miles away from me). I do like the idea of asking them what it is nonetheless, because I can't figure it out.

There are footpaths all over the place but they don't usually get cycle parking. The one lower down (at the Whipsnade end) does have a footpath which starts a few yards away.

Is it a rest stop because it's up a hill.

How excellently pointless! I think we should arrange a CC mass ride there, and all try to lock our bikes up at once, and then complain there aren't enough....
