Back in about 2012, when I was getting back into cycling, I was looking for a "digital home" for keeping my ride records. It basically came down to a coin toss between Strava and RWGPS. I can't remember why I chose RWGPS but I'm so glad I did.

I did sign up to Strava, but as my Garmin was also uploading direct to their platform there was no point keeping the Strava account.

I would be disappointed if Strava disappeared or lost Garmin inputs. Not because I use a Garmin - I don’t, I use Wahoo - but because Strava brings together all the rides and data from my riding group, who use various devices. Strava is a cross-platform service that we all use and have done for years. If we had to move to RWGPS or something else I suspect some wouldn’t bother.

Yes, for me the main benefit of Strava is that it is device agnostic. So it doesn't matter what device your friends/clubmates are using, you can see them all on Strava.

The won't for both. They are both beneficial to each other and they both know it. Though Strava, as they can be, have been very silly. Garmin gave them a bloody nose and put them in their place.

Strava's upcoming stock market launch must be behind all this. Providing a good service that people like, with some nice add-ons that people will pay for will no longer be good enough. They will in future have to monetise the hell out of every last byte of data and try to shut down competition through patents and restrictive Ts &C's.

How cynical!!

but you are probably right
They start to insist that I pay for the bit I use and I will be off

only thing keeping me there is the beacon facility - and I suspect that might just be the first on their list for "upgrading"

They're in danger of becoming the Rickenbacker of cycling.
