Errm, you're using a free service on this very forum.
If CC suddenly wanted a subscription for membership, would you continue to use it?

It's only free if you accept adverts. I don't, so it's not free. Plus, I do value Cyclechat sufficiently highly to think it's worth paying what is a very small annual amount to use it.

The problem with the allegedly 'free' model that many people seem to like is that it almost invariably involves advertising, which I and many people find ugly, distracting and intrusive. In my case, I'd not use Cyclechat if I had to have banner adverts. In other words: preferences vary!

Agreed. As always, each to their own!
I presume CC has to rely on ads (and voluntary subscriptions) to stay afloat. I use an ad blocker which seems to do its job as I don't get any intrusive ads on here.
Years ago I might have subscribed, but more recently I have drifted away from CC., so it doesn't justify any subscription.

If CC suddenly wanted a subscription for membership, would you continue to use it? I wouldn't. It's a useful site to use, but not important enough for me to justify paying for it. Which is exactly how I felt about Strava. I used it when it was free, but gave it up when it moved to subscription for access to anything useful. For the basics, Garmin Connect gives me all the stats I need, and it's free. As is RWGPS..

I pay for several forums, so it would be a decision I’d make at that point.
