The problem with Plex on a NAS is that of encoding. Most NAS cannot handle the encoding on the fly, so you either need to be very careful of your 'sources' or re-encode everything yourself, sometimes multiple times.

I run a fanless media PC with Plex that is beefy enough to handle the encoding on the fly. That way I can use Plex on any device and any location. Very useful when travelling and stuck in a hotel.

This is my concern.

However just been reading about Infuse on Apple TV which does the encoding on the apple TV box without issue

Too slow unless they have got a lot faster that's why I moved to a Ouya
Too slow for what?

I have had no issues at streaming 1080p video from a 1st gen pi. So long as XBMC/KODI runs from a decent class10 card, or a USB stick. Newer rPi's will handle it even better.

I use a Synology NAS drive which is brilliant, as it's basically a stand along box with a front end, so you can log in and install apps such as Plex.

one of the best solutions i found was either using Apple TV's jailbreaked and connected directly to your NAS, or i belive the new ATV allows the installation of Plex, or Amazon TV which i have two of, both are connected up and have Plex and Vimu.

the downside with Plex is you need to buy a NAS in their selected list, as it cant be installed on all NAS drives, as it deems them to powerful to covert so wont play the file, another problem is when the NAS is updated Plex invariably updates which happens a lot!, where as Vimu doesn't really have any problems playing any movie you own and doesn't update constantly.

if your running a smart TV in general you can link directly to your NAS and skip the whole media app side completely.

I have a panasonic TV and the app is not great. No resume, ignores folders etc.

However, the infuse app (by the same developers of atv) seems to do what I need without the need to jailbreak - it is a sanctioned tvOS app. I'm going to give it a try as it hopefully will work without upgrading my NAS

ahh infuse by firecore, they make the jailbreak software for ATV or should i say they sell a software you can use

i find the Amazon TV dongle or standalong box both work great, both let you add those apps, if you have hdmi then your laughing plug install add nas and your off simples.

Not sure, the Amazon stick app for streaming all requires plex with issues outlined above.

I bought a WD MyCloud in a sale

It was cheaper than buying the equivalent capacity external HDD

It streams content fine to the laptops and tables, but I have not tried the TV
