A modern pc does not sound like concorde taking off, the cpu can use minimal power, a decent gpu won't be stressed by 1080p (even the cpu can do it, if perhaps not as efficiently)

Even a modern netbook will have a dedicated GPU can handle 1080p these days, and probably won't even need a cooling fan.

I have a Raspberry Pi Model B running Kodi on the openelec distribution, so no excess background stuff in the way. Seems to work okay. It's connected to my Panasonic TV via HDMI, so my telly remote works via the CEC protocol.

It all seems a bit of a faff to check on your piles, though. Have you tried a mirror?

Update. Bought Apple TV and Infuse Pro app. Total c£150. Works beautifully. Meant I could use existing NAS without unnecessary upgrade.

Apple TV and app works very quickly and smoothly. All the decoding is done in the apple box. Plays all formats I have (MP4, avi, mkv). Playback is very smooth. Remote has Siri which is funny. "What did he say?" And it rewinds 30seconds with temporary subtitles!
