... and what they make you think of.

"Just down past the gasworks, by the meat factory door,
The five lamp boys were coming on strong."

My current route to work takes me down Gasværksvej - Gas Works Street - and Gasværksvej ends right at the meat packing district, by several former meat factory doors as it happens. And every time I ride home "Rat Trap" echoes through my mind.

What street names on your commute stick in your mind and why?

All a bit of a blur when I'm cycling....

There are lots of Brudenells and Cardigans on my usual run towards Otley. If I have my history right, they were the 'family' names of the two cavalry generals in the Crimean war. Why Leeds should name a large area of streets after two people like that, I do not know. Most of the older areas in Leeds have a few streets named after the builder, or in Chapeltown after the builder's children. A bit like Saltaire, Titus named the streets after his descendants.

I don't do street names, I do landmarks and lanes. I have never remembered street names, never have, never will.

I don't commute by bike any more (too far) but when i did I cycled through Coldcotes Circus (never once saw a circus), through Compton (not the South Central LA one, fortunately) and past the end of Stanley Road (as in the Paul Weller album).

How does that work when you invite friends round to your house?
Really.

I know street names but I don't equate them to locations without some sort of physical marker. Street names, apart from those I live in, carry no real significance to me. My spatial awareness does not work around street names. I can't be the only one who's brain works like that. That's not to say I don't know certain street names but generally I don't. I often admire those who can evoke emotions through street names but in fact lack the ability to do so myself. I tend to think of things in physical terms. So cliff tops might have an actual area name but it's not how I reference it, at least not without practice.

I expect it's pretty similar to what I do- turn left out of the tube station, go up the road past the stop'n'shop, then turn right when you get to the house where the bassist from the creepers used to live, we're right by the third speed bump.

And if one is not a creepers fan? Or perhaps wishes to mail you something?
