The 'problem', I think, is that there are a lot of up and coming young designers who think they can improve on the standard bike's engineering concepts.
The standard bike is already so well designed that any improvements are either very radical or very subtle. Subtle doesn't get them noticed so they go for radical. That tends towards redesigning something that already works well to solve a problem that doesn't really exist anymore.
Chains and belt drives are already good, shafts and cords, and alternative pedal movements (treadles), less so.
Looking at new recumbent bike/trike design, and load carrying bikes/trikes would be more effective I think, as there are still engineering design and use issues that can be re-examined.
