Many years ago Simon, a mate of mine, went and joined an old boy sat on a bench overlooking the top of the Slad Valley looking contemplative. As is Simon's way, he soon got chatting and sharing life stories. It turned out it was old Laurie Lee himself.

I just about remember having him pointed out to me in the bus station. I was maybe ten, I'd heard of him but he didn't mean anything to me at the time.

Yes, we saw him in the Woolpack a couple of years before he died. Always wished I'd had the nerve to go and say hello.

Like most teenage boys I had no interest in literature, til I read Cider With Rosie for English at age 14. It completely changed my attitude. I still didn't do very well in English though because our teacher was a cock (brother of playwright Alan Plater, and didn't we know it!)

I did 30 miles and 2000ft climbing yesterday, forcing myself to keep a steady pace (which doesn't come naturally to me). It's completely different to Cirencester!

I'm wondering how I'll ever be able to up the miles to 50, 60 or more, without having a break half way through, which I never do...
