I'm new to the world of disc breaks and so on a learning curve. I took my bike out for its second ride last night and the rear disc has developed a squeak under breaking. Anything obvious I should be checking ? I'm hoping its something simple and I'm being stupid ...

Many previous queries on CC and no single simple answer, so it's not a stupid question.

Here's a thread that discusses the usual causes and possible solutions; pay particular attention to the replies from @YellowSaddle as he knows what he's talking about.

Good luck getting rid of it.

Did you bed your new pads?
The recommended method is to find a steep hill, get some speed up and brake hard to generate heat. Do this a couple of times. Do not touch the disk, it will be very hot.

As what @glasgowcyclist says, there's a lot of threads about the problem.

My solution.... semi metallic brake pads from Disco Brakes.
They just don't squeal* and are the only pads I have found that don't

*Apart from in the wet, all disc brake pads squeal in the wet.

I always put a tiny smear of copper grease on the back of the pads. never had an issue
