You're not on your own LyB.

I've run out twice during the ownership of my present car. It doesn't have a blinky LED to warn me i'm running low. The needle and gauge is open to interpretation according to how positively, or negatively, i look at it. And i'm a bit tight, so prefer filling up on Sundays when the prices are teeny bit lower.

The last time i ran out of fuel i had my, not quite, 2-year-old with me (doh!) and we were some distance from a petrol station (double doh!). I'd managed to roll the car off the main road. We have a child seat that fastens to the seat belt, and not a fancy ISO-fix model, so it fits in any car. I phoned for a taxi, explained the situation, and one arrived in a few minutes. Off we went, bought fuel, came back, problem solved. I don't know what the fuss is about.

Except that here it can get uncomfortably cold. Minus 17C this week... ramble, ramble, ramble...

Anyway, take comfort in that you're not the only 'fuel' out there.
