What's it called when you're trying to race someone who is so much faster that you have to give up and pretend, even to yourself, you're just enjoying the ride home at a good but relaxed and non-competitive pace??

There's not many other bikes going the same way as me but, occasionally, on the way home i meet this horrible little tweep.. i'll stop because i'm getting angry again

The awkward situation is when the person is front is going slightly slower than your ideal pace. You know you want to overtake, you know it will take a little extra push, but you worry that they might up their pace slightly - and nothing is worse than facing the humiliation of being re-overtaken.

Yes I know that feeling ... do you over take knowing that you aren't going significantly faster... to be honest I don't mind if they do overtake ... I just want to go at the pace I decide...

I do like seeing someone in the far distance and upping my speed to try and catch up ... but more to improve my pace rather than a kind of "I've got to win". I'm never going to be the fastest person on a bike (apart from at the lights when I seem to start fast and then they all catch me up).

I just worked out that I used to be a 4 when I rode my Bianchi road bike to work, but now I ride my single speed with mudguards and panniers I'm a 7; I must be racking up the points

I don't get much opportunity to chase down those higher on the food chain, but I'm sure I get regular hybrids and MTBs trying to gain a few points from me. I may only have 1 gear but it's quite high and I can keep up a mid 20s speed for a while which is usually enough to drop most :hello:

I don't partake in this racing lark, partly because I see very few other cyclists on the way, partly because the last thing I want to do is get to work more quickly, and partly because I can't be bothered.

But out of curiosity I checked my FCN and it's... drumroll... *13*

I remember once being out on a leisurely ride along the coast, heading home with the wind behind me and doing a decent speed (well, as fast as you'd expect someone to be able to go on a cheap Apollo MTB thing) when I became aware of a presence coming up beside me. It was a young lad on a BMX I'd just passed going hell for leather with his knees up by his ears. As soon as he got past and made his point he gave up and fell behind.

So I may be no match for a road bike, but 10-year-olds better watch out!

They're heavy and they're seriously undergeared. Really not built for speed

On the other hand if you're only going to be riding it for a few minutes then you can give it everything. True, on a downhill slope you'll probably spin out and uphill the weight is like a drag anchor but on the flat bits they're great fun, especially when you manage not to get scalped.

I can't work out if I'm a fakenger or not, I've a Spesh Langster (alloy, not steel and usually in need of a clean) and generally have on skinny jeans, cycling jacket and a satchel. I guess I must look like one, even though I'm not riding fixed (bad knee, that's my excuse). If I am then I'm an eight other wise I'm a 6 and stand no chance of scoring any points!

It seems if i utter the words "morning" as I pass a cyclist in the morning this must be me asking them to race

Do you (a) filter aggressively, (b) jump red lights in the face of oncoming traffic, (c) clip your mobile phone to the shoulder strap of your satchel? Two or more "yes" answers and you're a fakenger (unless your bike has mudguards), less than that and we'll let you off.
