Assuming this is the initial submission & not your corrected re-submission don't take things to easy, unfortunately the viva can be a real kick in the teeth. And a piece of advice - make sure you know where your knowledge boundaries are.

It can be but it's not always the case! Cross that bridge when you come to it. I was totally traumatised after mine and demolished a bottle of wine in about half an hour! I passed with just typos though!

Just take a leaf out of Wittgenstein's book on vivas. When the Examinerposed his first question, Wittgenstein retorted it was clear from the question that the Examiner hadn't understood anything he's written and suggested they retire to the nearest boozer right away. The Examiner agreed, commenting:

"It is my opinion that Mr. Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus is a work of philosophical genius. It nonetheless fully meets the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy."

I agree, it mainly comes down to preparation & your ability to deal with that kind of examination/pressure. Most who I know that had bad vivas were people who relaxed far to much & assumed they had their PhD because they'd submitted.

So take things easy, get your prep in & be confident in yourself walking into the room. There's no luck in a viva, just preparation & ability.

Well done! I remember handing it in being a bit of an anti climax. I handed it over to the girl at the desk and she just about managed to raise a grunt, never mind a smile or a well done!

I was going to say that the best recorded result was Mr Wittgenstein's (it was in mathematics IIRC) but Delfste Post beat me to it.
