It's worth remembering that everything new around the buyer's price point (unless tied to a contract ) will be 4g only. Not sure if this is an issue to the OP.

It's worth noting that a lot of Androids, particularly Samsung, can have OS upgrades beyond their official last version, but it will be more raw Android and less Samsung. This is by using LineageOS, but it is not a trivial thing to achieve for an average user.

There are no android phones that small, apart from some of the cheap AliExpress/temu things which are probably not what you are looking for.
Other than folding ones which are well out of your budget.
You might find a second hand or a refurbished/graded folder such as Motorola RAZR or Samsung Z Flip in that ballpark though if you are happy with not new.

Phone cases are generally made to fit the specific model snugly. Any other phone that will fit in it will have be smaller in all dimensions so is likely to be held insecurely. You don't want it falling out.

If you're treating yourself to nice things (and why not), treat yourself to a new case at the same time.
My phone case is not designed to fit snugly. It was designed for my first smart phone, an Android. It's like a leather wallet with the phone on one side and the other side holds bank cards, notes etc. The phone protective case is velcroed/glued to it. I would like to keep it if at all possible because it's the sort of item that acquires character with age and without being scruffy it does deter thieves.

I have the iPhone13 Mini, about 5 years old and, like the op, am not happy with the battery, but I also don't want want to get a bigger phone. I am not a particular fan of IPhones, but then my use of the phone is so limited technically that I don't notice any difference between IOS and Android so I'll probably end up having a new battery fitted

Hi Peeps, thanks for the suggestions. Having checked out current prices, I have revised my budget upwards and could go up to £500 although I would prefer to spend less so that I'm less stressed if I lose it. Also if it has a central camera, it will fit the existing phone case and it will be a bonus not to have to trim the case. Finally, it doesn't have to be new.

Yeah it was the iPhone 13 Mini that I bought second hand as it's smaller than the other offerings. I change my phone about once every twenty years. I ended up with iPhone because my friend started giving me his cast offs - I think he felt guilty for running over my Samsung Galaxy
