I've never been much of a suit man. I have one black suit for interviews, funerals and weddings, I have a grey blazer and a boating jacket that cost me £10 of the internet. I'm pondering getting another for semi-formal and celebratory occasions. Maybe I'll change my whole style and become a suit man. Do all suits need to be dry cleaned?

I don’t think you need to over complicate things here;

1. Wool
2. Try it on

For semi formal I prefer the jeans/French cuffs thing, but if I were going to own one suit it would be navy with dark brown brogues.

You can find online bargains but I would choose somewhere I know will take returns and make adjustments, eg;

Oh and 3. Forget skinny fit.

The M&S washable suits come up fine, bought them for my son for 6th form as that is the dress code, although have tried washing the jackets yet.

I alternate between suits and dark chino's with a blazer / jacket for work. Rarely wear a tie, but always with decent usually double cuff suit.

Like some others, I was luckily enough to visit Asia regularly with work so had a copy of my best fitting suit ran up in Vietnam, using their nice European wool cloth, with 2 pair of trousers.

So, how much is a tailored suit? You don't see too many tailors on the High Street. What about those online tailored suit shops? I'd be worried about taking my measurements wrongly and wasting scores of dosh. Also what happens if I succeed in losing the weight I put on this year? My expensive suit wouldn't fit.

Decent suits can be adjusted, within reason. As per my link earlier.

I can’t speak for the crazy foreign mail order things.

On occasions when we are "going out", and it takes Mrs @BoldonLad half a day (or possibly more) to decide which outfit to wear, I usually point out that, having only one of each type of attire (ie 1 pair "dress"shoes, 1 pair "casual" shoes, 1 pair Trainers etc), make the decision making process much shorter. I simply have to decide Formal/Casual/Scruff. If the decision is Formal, I wear my (only) suit, if it is casual, I wear my only jacket and trousers, if Scruff (my preferred option), then it is Jeans. Simple. ;)

I’ve always bought my suits from M&S as Corbyn and many others do, quality is good. I guess they are less popular today due to changing fashion. Most quality ones need dry cleaning and keep their shape better.
If you want to be taken seriously wear a suit.
I was once complimented on my suit.
I said it was from M&S.
I was told by a fellow PR bod that I shouldn't admit to/broadcast that.
But that's PR for you.
I do have an Ermenegildo Zegna suit I bought in a sale.
Must admit it seems to kinda float.
The Italians do know a thing or two about tailoring.

Opposite in our house, MrsF is driven bonkers, it takes me half an hour to decide which watch to wear, never mind the clothes.

A few times, I’ve not gone out trying to gate crash or anything. But sometimes I’m in a bar or hotel and assumed to be part of something I’m not and get free drinks/food. It’s not my modus operandi but not an unusual occurrence. And if it looks significant I’ll be clear who I am and almost always they don’t care :smile:

One time I went to a golf show very early, planning to go to work later in the morning. So I’m in a suit, arrived and asked if there was anywhere I could plug in a laptop - I was going to VPN in and get some work done before the show started. I got shown into a part of the hotel I probably shouldn’t have been, met Ian Poulter and a few other pros, given free coffee and breakfast while I worked. I think they thought I was with the show.

You want to be careful in hospitals though, I’ve been mistaken for a doctor two or three times by staff.
