Up late, long sleep, bug still hanging around. Coffee , then more waiting to not have a cold!

My Kiwi pal is back over in September and fancies a bike tour in Scotland, maybe about 250miles. We've done the Kirkpatrick C2C.
Any ideas for a route? Mainly tarmac with some gravel would be preferred.

Highlands surely? With both the English and Scottish schools off(?) the roads will be quieter and accommodation cheaper with no beer shortages.

I did a mostly tarmac back roads with some cycleways / light gravel / old railway routes: Glasgow to Aberdeen via Lochs Lomond and Tay. Train to Glasgow, Balloch, up to Rowardennan and back, Callendar, Killin, Pitlochry, back down to Perth, Dundee and up the East coast to Stonehaven. Chickened out on last bit of A92 but poss a bit quieter now the western bypass A90 is open.

You get some lovely scenery ok not full west coast or Highlands, but easy enough to get b&bs, pubs, restaurants etc. And simple to get to and from by train with the bikes booked on. Can't remember the mileage but was 200+.

That sounds a decent route, having cycled up the coast to Stonehaven , the A road is worth avoiding!

From memory all the way to Montrose was done on minor / back roads.

Another option would be to head over Glenshee then back down the Dee valley, chunks of that are old railway like Ballater to Aboyne and the S Deeside road is a lot quieter than A93. Or was when I were up there...

Or..or..or.. another one, keep heading N towards Aviemore, Grantown then take the Speyside Way, gravel old railway, down to Craigellachie then on to Spey Bay. Lots of whisky options round there! And you do get scenery. Ridden that on tourer. And you have the railway stations various to ease return.

I asked AI to show the 'real' me.
Hoachin' wi' tourist camper vans, cars, motorbikes, many drivers don't know how to use single track roads and passing places. I was there, in car, before NC500 became a thing, and it was a really pleasant drive. Nowadays? 🤔

Well in that case, I'll go with your suggestion about Craigellachie as my OH is from that area. It's certainly quiet if you stay off the main route.
