Here's my effort

For all the time I have been looking at the moon, since early childhood, with and without a telescope, I have never been able to visualise the man in the moon that other people seem to be able to see.

Nor me!

Nice image, Panter. Could you give us some details about equipment/exposure, etc.?

Personally, all right it may be a grand event for the doom-mongers and astrologers, but I don't see what the fuss is all about. The Moon goes through perigee (when it appears largest) once every month, it's just that perigee doesn't usually coincide with the Full Moon, so you normally see the largest possible moon at some different phase. And Full Moon isn't the best time of the month to observe the moon: you can see far more detail at one of the Quarters.

Ah well.....

I was tempted to post a pic of my bum (which does kind of look like a full moon and probably about the same size) but then I rose above it ;-)

Unfortunately I don't have the EXIF data as I played around with the contrast in PIXLR which lost it, but it's about as follows:

Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Sigma 150-500mm (at 500mm)
f11 (or 18, I tried with both)
Mode: Manual
Shutter speed: Can't remember exactly, but surprisingly high. Certainly over 1/125
ISO: 200
Tripod mounted and fired using remote release.
Post image processing (brightness & contrast) in PIXLR
Focus by autofocus (AF-S.) I started in manual (set to infinity) but it was blurry. Luckily the AF seemed to have no problem at all.

I actually got some pretty decent images right from the off, thanks to this article which highlights just how brightly illuminated the Moon actually is

That could just be a picture of a normal sized moon! You should have held up a ruler or something in the photo to give us an idea of scale....

I shall make sure to do that next time

It's much harder with a telescope, or a photo, but it's sort of roughly a bit like this:

I agree, it's a bit tenuous, but I guess it's down to the same need to see patterns as creates the constellations.

I suppose my lack of ability with faces doesn't help, I probably can't see what I am supposed to be looking at.

Wouldn't happen to be a Piccaso woud it?

I have days when I feel like that, only with a smaller bust.

I find that the 'man in the moon' is less obvious in photos, so I wonder if there's an element of dazzle in there too - in photos, the light is flatter, less brilliant.
