Supermarket's own?

This morning I took a risk with the aim of saving a little money. I decided to try Sainsbury's Corn Flakes instead of Mr Kellog's. Surely you can't go far wrong with cornflakes. In reality, they don't taste of a huge amount anyway, what could possibly go wrong.

Uuugh! Come back Mr Kellog, all is forgiven.

So what supermarket brands have you tried or switched to? What ones are as good as the snob-brands and what ones are worth avoiding?

I need all the money help I can get.... Looking at buying a house (if we ever sell ours!), and the wife wants a big garden along with my big garage (for the turbo training of course!):bravo:

I tried own label fruit and fibre this week. Rough. Only eating it because i hate throwing food away.

I use a fair bit of Sainsbury's own stuff for staples. Their tinned tomatoes, flour, part-bake bread, peanut butter, wraps, brie (yes really), ice cream and many other things are all good.

I think some things are worth spending a bit extra on though. With the odd exception (like the brie) I don't economise all that much on cheese or meat because you tend to get what you pay for. I do however make a beeline for the reduced section (hey, I'm a student) and my choices are often determined by what's on sale at any given moment.

Sainsburys own weetabix are OK, as are M&S Cornflakes (offer £1 a big box).
Sainsburys Red Label Tea is our favourite.

Forgot tea, that's another thing we get. The Gold Label stuff is nice for everyday.

Cornflakes are tricky, most own-brand ones are rubbish, you'd be better of eating the box! We buy Lidl Rice Crispies and Shredies and they are fine, you just need to try the different products and see which ones work.

Lidl/Aldi porridge oats are exactly the same as Scotts Porridge oats.

THe sainsburys version of just right is good, but the co-op version always contains fruit that's hard enough to crack teeth.

I only ever buy Hellmans mayo, Heinz beans, Heinz ketchup, Kellogs cornflakes, Lurpak butter, Birds Eye peas, they've been around forever for a reason.

weetabix are a safe bet anywhere, same with Oats...FFS the price difference between Quaker and a bag of 'simple oats' - it's shocking.....

Cornflakes are just rubbish anyway, but do break up the tedium of oats or weetabix stuff...........

Our big gripe....... tinned tomatoes.....

Were 12 months ago 25p for a tin from the supermarket own, now 40p... still a fraction of the 'named' ranges though...it's a tomato.....FFS.

Mandatory. I know people say the factories that make these items stick an ASDA or Tesco own brand label on exactly the same product that goes out to the consumer and therefore it's brand snobbery to think it's better kwality but people who say that are psychiatrically insane and need to be on some form of powerful anti-psychotic.
