I'll say sorry in advance for being so dumb, but how does one add a hat to ones avatar? (and the get rid of it again later)

For mine I saved the hat image off the internet and used Photoshop to trim it and add it to the photo of Busby. It's then saved as a different version to the original.

(sneaks off without admitting to asking my brother to help do it.)

The avatar is a cat called Silver that I met in Cyprus a few years back. I always wondered how she would look with a hat. I'm impressed!
