Surprised by a person’s trust in a stranger.

Back when I used to pay for prescription charges I was at our GP surgery (pharmacy 'in-house') and I went to collect a 1 item prescription but had forgotten my wallet containing my card (pre-phone-wallet days!)

A stranger offered to lend me a tenner (the cost might have been £6 or £7 back then) to pay for it and just gave me his address so that I could return* it! Didn't want any details from me, either.

*I did.

When I was the stranger...

In the mid 80s I lived in New York. One evening I was getting cash out of an ATM when I met a very flustered Scottish student, trying in vain to get cash out on his British bank card. I lent him $40 to pay for his YMCA or whatever. I forget the details. People I told were certain I'd been scammed, but if he was a scam artist he was also a supernaturally brilliant actor with his performance as a confused scared student.

Anyway it seemed for a while that the cynics were right, but after a few months I got a letter from him with the $40 apologising because he had to wait for his travel expenses to come through.

Timpsons cut me a replacement key but couldn't guarentee it would work due to wear on the old one.

The guy said try it and if it does work, then come back an pay for it.

As I read the OP I thought it was going to result in having to give his address as 'that's the way we invoice'.
Many years ago I was in my garage which adjoined others used by neighbours - I'd only recently moved there. A young lad was outside the next garage and his moped had run out of petrol. I asked if he was the neighbour's Brother to which he replied 'yes'. I gave him some petrol and he said he'd repay me. He never returned, and she didn't have a Brother.
