I got my Finnish girlfriend at the time back when we had a sliced beef cob and I put some Horseradish on mine "whats that" she asked so I told her it was like mustard but not as stongly flavoured so she put plenty on hers took a big bite and started to chew.

It'll take a very long time to become just mush. You only want very small pieces (easier to keep down).
It's a summer food (mainly because you have to have it outside), so I wouldn't keep it too much longer anyway. It'll taste better in the sunshine!!
Just as a warning when the tin distends like that be careful when you first pierce the tin as they will be some spray, and you won't want to get it on your clothing.
