Any Swedes here? I picked up some last December. Since the weather warmed up, the tin has started to develop a life of it's own. Does it need to go in the fridge, or have I already wrecked it?

I am guessing I may need to open that outside.

Fermenting nicely would be my (somewhat limited by experience (only had it twice)) suggestion.

This fermented herring, a northern Swedish speciality, is widely believed to be the smelliest food in the world. Noxious gases build up in the tin, making the cans bulge, and most airlines in the world have banned passengers transporting surströmming for fear of the cans exploding and causing the plane to be evacuated.
The European Union, in theory, should outlaw the fermented fish because it has too high a polychlorinated biphenyl -- a cancer-causing toxin. But Sweden was able to win a special concession from the EU

My concern is if you let it go too much it may just break down to mush.
It'll take a very long time to become just mush. You only want very small pieces (easier to keep down).

It's a summer food (mainly because you have to have it outside), so I wouldn't keep it too much longer anyway. It'll taste better in the sunshine!!

Just as a warning when the tin distends like that be careful when you first pierce the tin as they will be some spray, and you won't want to get it on your clothing.
