Flash sometimes works, when taking an image of something which is brightly lit against a dark background, like those quildings.

Images taken on compacts at concerts, for instance, using the flash will force the exposure to be similar to that required under the stage lights, whilst a shot using ambient light would allow for the darkness around the stage and over-expose the subject.
