OK: BOAB, you clearly have you own understanding of what to "be a man" is all about. But I would just like everyone else on here, and particularly all women, to be reassured that quite a few of us saddled with a Y chromosome nonetheless try quite hard to move on from an understanding of manhood as being about the "right" to leave our cave and go hunting sabre tooth tigers whenever we want and without consulting anybody. In fact, some of us try not to understand life, let alone relationships, let alone relationships with people we have made a commitment to, as being very much about "rights" at all....
Reminds of a quote from the film Barnyard
"a strong man stands up for himself, a stronger man stands up for others."

When I was doing an O U writing course I got marked down heavily for one of my characters using SWMBO. The tutor (a female) "did not belive in this sort of derogatory abbreviation" I pointed out that unlike herself and many of my fellow students, my wife and I are happily married and have been since the year . and I always check with her when I think a remark may seem offensive or condescending. I got marked down even more heavily on my next assignment. I still refer to the wife as SWMBO or the Gaffer and I think she likes it.
How stupid of her! It was a character using it!
Assuming she disapproves of things like murder, her attitude would prevent all murder mysteries being written...

I just use the name Mistress, unless I'm told otherwise.
In this household it is a 'he who must be obeyed'. He earns a wage, I still can't work from my dig bite injury... so if I want anything new, I run it past HIM first, end of story. No handbags in the household (rucksacks and panniers are a completely different matter mind you)... and shoes are only purchased when needed and usually cheap (£150 selling for £14.99 on ebay worn once type jobs). If you exclude any type of shoe/boot with the words hiking or mountaineering in their name, I have precisely no shoes or boots! could explain why I need to get out more:wacko:

We have a joint account that we both pay equal into from our salaries to cover everything, mortgage, bills, shopping nursury fees, holiday fund the house keeper and gardeners wages:laugh: We both have our own accounts with what's left from our salaries, that is our own money to do as we wish. As long as the the joint acc is covered and the children are ok for everything then all is fine. Neither of us ask for 'permission' to do something we don't, we discuss what it is either of us wishes to go off and do and there is no conflict with other arrangements...

^^^^^
This is the way to go.

Funny enough I was thinking about this the other day. If me and mrs p divorced she would get half of everything (house, furniture etc...) so why shouldn't a couple split everything 50/50 when paying for it and then enjoy their own respective left over salary how they wish.

If genders were reversed in the op's swmbo example I'm sure people would be up in arms about how the husband is domineering, chauvinistic, etc... And whilst each individual should live how they want to, the whole swmbo, asking before spending my own money thing strikes me as misandric cr@p.

I'm the main earner here but she just buys what she wants when it comes to clothes and shoes, actually I probably buy more for her than she does herself.

Over thirty pairs of heels at the last count, mind you I'm not complaining.
