I hit a squirrel y'day. Didn't think that was possible - they're such quick and nimble little buggers - but this one approached, paused, then made a mad dash straight under my front wheel. It all happened so fast I wasn't sure where or how badly I'd hit him - tho' I definitely did...felt the impact - but when I looked round he was sprinting across the grass, so it couldn't have been too serious.

I was part of a bit of a cycle pile-up when on a school cycling trip as a teenager. At the bottom of a hill, one rider went down very quickly and half a dozen more of us got tangled in the wreckage and went down too. There seemed to be blood sprayed everywhere in a fine mist, but on examination, none of it was ours (we were oozing from some road rash, fortunately nothing worse).

We eventually realised that a blackbird had shot out of the hedge just in time to go partly through the spokes of the lead rider's front wheel. The whizzing spokes took its head off, but not before it brought the rider down. It was still rather gorily spraying blood everywhere when the rest of us arrived in the heap.

No, it wasn't wearing a helmet.
