Our neighbour across the road was a Chinese woman in her eighties, who didn't look a day over 60. She'd be out at the side of her house every morning, even in the snow, going through her routine. It was mesmerising and made me feel calm just watching her; the benefits from actually doing it must be fab.

Go for it @Accy cyclist !

Tai Chi seems a bit poncy from the outside but doing it is quite a workout and really good for flexibility, balance, posture, core strength, agility, control and interacting with other people. A lot of martial artists use it for additional training. The moves do have combat applications and will add to your armoury and improve your fighting technique whatever style you practice. As far as riding a bike, it fills in the blanks that cycling leaves out and is a good mix.

I first saw this when I was in Hong Kong in 1971 , people of all ages , every morning , none of us had a clue what they were upto , then in the early 80's it came up in discussion , it was popular with a particular bunch of Ladies that frequented my Local ,they deemed it as being therapeutic in many ways , I was invited to attend with them ,but declined, all a bit to slow for me in those days , I'd say it would do you no harm , there will be plenty on the net about the benifits , yep , no doubt you will be self conscious, but that will disappear,
Pint and a1/2 ! ,
Mmmm , big decision

Have any of you done it? My therapist/advisor from the job club has suggested i go to a beginners class which is being held tomorrow. I'm a bit apprehensive. Isn't it a bit poncy i ask?

Define "poncy".

I do it along with Pilates. If you think of it as simply moving your arms and legs in particular patterns, then it probably isn't for you. A bit like looking at a yoga class and wondering what sitting cross legged on a mat achieves.
It can be challenging mentally and physically.

I sometimes see people doing it in the park , i like to do about four or five slow motion steps as i walk past them and then speed up again .

Just go try it if it's been recommended for you, why do you need strangers to tell you what to do?

It's £4, hardly going to break the bank I'm sure.

Ref your link and this thread, I reckon you're more likely to be the drug crazed pensioner rather than the tai chi black belt

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Have you looked at YouTube. Probably lots of videos on there showing you how to do the basics anyway. Then you can decide if you want to spend £4.00.^_^
