iPad mini?

In between here and there
If you have an Android phone it has to be the Nexus, as you can have the same apps FOC. Plus if you use it to read books they are kept up to date on the two devices including the last page read.

Playbook is only cheap because it failed no support no apps etc. Wasted money in my opinion.

Nexus 7 all the way.

There are genuine iPad bargains to be had on eBay. I got a new one for £100 less than the then shop price.
So it was only overpriced by about £100 then?

(A non-techy friend of mine has been enjoying playing about on my Samsung Galaxy Tab, but was more impressed by her brother's iPad. I'm not sure if it was the fact that he has loads of apps and I only have a few, or whether she genuinely found it better to use.)

I think any debate on the particular merits of a bit of kit where one person slags off a bit of kit without actually saying why said bit of kit deserves it, is null and void.

There seems to be a lot of 'tribalism' over android and IOS or Apple and 'anyone who licences android software into a cheap bit of kit' to give them their exact names.

It's horses for courses, if you have an iPhone or iMac you are better with the Apple because you have already got some of the stuff going on.

If you prefer tinkering with the way things look and for some reason hate Apple just because they are popular then get the Android.

Be aware however that google stole the idea for Android whilst they were on the Apple board and it was developing IOS...hence the lawsuits.

depends what you want really and how good your i.t skills are. if you want something that is designed to work and do the basics , go for an ipad device.

if you want something you can customise to your hearts desire (ie theme, home screens), which can run loads of applications in the background go for an android.

i see the market for ipads being peps who were not brought up with computers or want something that will run the one app you want at a time.

Err, you can do ALL of that on an iPad.

With Windows, you had to learn a bit about computers to get the most out of them, file systems, install program's and choosing where to install them, defragging and all that.

Apple realised most people wanted to turn it on, click a button and browse the Internet...or if you wanted to buy a game just press buy and it installs, no worries about where to install it etc...

Tinkerers who love windows because they understand it HATE Apple because there is no need for them, it is a closed system which simply works.

Android is the same except depending which device you buy depends which version of the software you will get as when it is updated, not all devices update.

There really isn't much to choose between them.

What's all this running apps in the background thing you're going on about? What apps are you running?

I was 'brought up on computers'. I have an iPad and and an HTC One X. The iPad blows the HTC away in terms of usability and feel, and along with apps and iCloud, the iOS ecosystem is still years ahead of Android.

I don't prefer iOS because running 2 apps is too complicated. I prefer it because it's better.

I'm not interested sitting playing around with silly themes or having wallpapers that somersault every 3 minutes. I remember nerds used to do stuff like code. Now they just play with themes!

That's all well and good. You can waste the £180 on something equally as frivolous!

Mr Haematocrit

msg me on kik for android
I have the iPad, Xoom and Nexus and develop on them...... The Nexus is by far the best tablet by a mile, its more intuitive, faster and features better specs the latest Android release is also a match for the functionality of iOS... It was awarded tablet of the year for a good reason.
iOS devices such as the iPad are great if you want something to just work, if you want choice, freedom and performance they blow. The iOS ecosystem is years ahead of Android because its exceptionally restrictive and non inclusive, it works well with Apple device.. A Samsung android device can transfer pictures to a HTC android device using bump without issue, you can't do that with iOS device as it only plays well with Apple devices..... Likewise you can video chat on a variety of applications such as 'ovo' between different brands on the Android platform.. With iOS you have face time which works with what other brands exactly?

So if you want freedom, choice and performance and great specification hardware go with an android device
If you want things to just work and am willing to give up your freedom for this go with an Apple device
if you want a platform which is no longer relevant go with a Blackberry device
If you want a device which is interesting look at Windows Mobile
