Any reviews of the Samsung Tab 2 7" - I have an option to pick one up reduced at £119 as I've just upgraded my phone to a Samsung S3, and can trade in my old smartphone for a discounted Tab 2 ?
I don't have one of them, but I paid over double that for an earlier Galaxy Tab (1) 8.9 and am very happy with it, if that is any help!

Been thinkingof eventually getting a tab and was drawn to the Nexus 7,but I see that it has a built-in battery which can't be swapped as it (surely will eventually?) starts to fade/hold less charge.

Why do they do this?

Or am I being just so old-fashioned?

Not many tablets allow you to remove the battery, as it allows the manufacturer the make the device lighter (no easy access mechanism), but one of the downsides is that the battery is not (easily) replacable.

Saying that, you should get years out of the battery.

Thanks for the reply and info.

So the weight weenies strike again.
I consider low weight in a tablet to be important. With its protective cover on, my Tab is still a bit too heavy to hold in the air for long periods the way you might with a Kindle, but it is light enough to use for hours balanced on my lap, which is what I am doing now.

The issue of battery replacement is a valid one though, and something which I have looked into for my Tab. I was curious about how to get inside it because it isn't obvious! There are articles online describing how to source and replace tablet batteries. With care, it shouldn't be too difficult and I will be happy to do it as long as I get at least 2 years out of every battery.

It is a point to consider though. One thing the Chinese are rubbish at is batteries, but that's OK 'cos we do their product development for them, free.

I tried to get a cheap MP3 player for my daughter and gave up eventually; none of them had a battery that would hold a charge. I have a Creative MuVo one which is 10 years old - Chinese, but guess what? It uses an AAA battery. A work colleague just gave me another one which I have given to my daughter.

I bought my son an Archos one but he lost it (not much the Chinese can do about that!)...

I have a Blackberry Playbook, bought one the day after the came out. It is a very solid and well built tablet. Performance is good and I love the multi tasking (can play music, while editing docs and downloading stuff). Yes the selection of apps sucks, but I only use mine for email (gmail and outlook), calendar, web surfing, citrix and music while at work. Plus if you also have a blackberry phone the Bridge application is great.

I wouldn't pay full price again for one, but if you can get one cheap they are worth it.

Thanks for some up-to-date info on the Playbook.

They are pretty cheap now, something like £120.

I've got a 10" iPad and a 64gb Playbook. Purely from a physical size point of view the iPad is too big and the Playbook is too small!

The PB is a much handier size, fits in pocket, courier bag etc, but i do find the keyboard just a bit small for my fat fingers. I suspect all 7" pads are the same. In terms of performance, I can't fault it - superb screen, fast, and well built. It has no 3G but if necessary I use my phone as a 3G hotspot. Works well. The camera** is excellent and the video camera superb. Mine is mainly used for browsing, some emialing, plus occasional mapping, letter writing, normal sort of stuff. Don't think there are too many apps for it, but to be honest, who cares, I haven't felt deprived as a consequence. I don't play games on it apart from Tetris.

At such a giveaway price, the PB is well worth considering, and gets my vote.

** Has the Nexus got a camera?

But what on earth are they too big and small for?

I didn't realise you could do that!

Does that have to be with a Blackberry phone, or can all tablets/phones do it? I was thinking of the Nexus 3g as I might need to retrieve emails away from work/home occasionally, but if it's easy to connect using my phone I could save the extra 40 quid.

The Nexus doesn't have a back camera, just the video call one.
