Tales from today's commute....

old route into work this morning as always with this route quiet for the first miles, then dodge the retractable dog leads from people walking four dogs at a time, failing that walking in twos or threes across the shared cycling path, kept speed down as its a park nice views in the motning but a pig get through when summer is in full swing. Nice bottle neck, on small road on way into work. Rubbish lorry parked up cars decided its okay to drive into on coming traffic as a cyclist I am supposed to stop for them of course. Nice que of cars forcing their way through must be great job you have if you really need to rush into work that early that quickly. Rest of journey layed back, no trouble, felt humid this morning, no jacket just T-shirt and shorts still feels strange after all the winter months and all the layers was wearing just over two months ago.

Back on the commute yesterday after non last week (on leave for a bit of it and out of office another day). Windy one yesterday and a late start in the office due to an ultrasound appointment. Stuck to the road rather than the country park/Fallowfield Loop, as the 'scallies' are usually up by then.

Nice ride in this morning, but almost bonnet surfed just 1/2 mile from home. Coming down the shared path approaching a road near the local 'tip', I saw a car coming round the bend, nothing behind, so it meant I'd be able to join the road just after the car passed. Except the car just turned across my path. Slammed on. diver stopped and wound down his window.....

He couldn't have been more apologetic - he'd not indicated and it was all his fault very sorry - I was visible and he had clearly seen me checking him on approach to the junction. Just kept saying he was sorry. I said it's OK, don't worry. Bid me a good day.

I wish more interactions were like this - for me it literally makes the difference between everyone going away feeling good (or at least OK) about a bad situation and my wanting to repeatedly bounce the offender's face off the kerb..


Decent ride in today - sunny, tailwind out, headwind back... wore shorts today after two days of ill-fated boil-in-the-bag trouser caution. Brompton has a slow puncture but I stuffed 80psi up it before leaving and it held OK.

Nothing remarkable other than a reminder of how priviledged and lucky I am for this to be my journey to work

Only posting yesterday's commute today as it was a rapid turn around last night then I forgot. When I fired up National Rail Enquiries quite a few trains were cancelled except for the one before mine, it was on time. Well according to the Web site! In the short 15mins to get changed and dash to the Station it had got delayed for a points failure. The cancelled services were due to 'staff shortages'. Then the announcement came through that I'm certain plays on a weekly loop, 'Major Incident in the Peterborough area'. Amazingly the early train got through to Peterborough anyway. Then it was a d@m quick change of shoes and bike and race down to the local group ride.

Nice tailwind on way home from work last night after two weeks of headwinds on way home its makes aa big difference, didnt feel windy this moring or thorugh three quarters of the journey in then hit the headwind legs churning and chin gridning limped into work. Not sure if cycling tomorrow supposed to be warm so will see how it goes on way home tonight.

Nothing extra to report here, fine riding, dry, sunny ish, quite windy at times.

Speedy commute this morning, if not rather warm. Been getting a squeak from the front wheel and hadn't bothered to trace it properly, until I got into work. No noise when spinning the wheel, nothing from the back wheel. Turn bars and rock bike, squeak squeak. Hmm spokes ? Squeezed all of them, noise gone ! If it comes back I'll quarter tighten the lot (I built the wheel).

The receptionist at work said it's going to thunderstorm all afternoon. I was like - 'yeh right'. Checked my phone forecast, bugger !

Last nights ride home needed a diversion round the back streets of Moss Side due to a Police Cordon on the main Alex Road. Found out this morning that an old lady had lost control of her car, mounted the pavement and had killed a male pedestrian. Blimey.

Absolutely rinsed last night due to the previous day's activities on top of a lot of riding generally. Dragged myself out on the now standard northern jaunt beyond, and back to the monkey bars for a solitary pull-up and neg as well as a cautious (mostly active) hang as I'm still struggling with a few knackered bits.

Limped back through the city centre to be surprised by an encounter with the tow path's super-hot redhead - the first time I've seen her since I stopped commuting in from outside. I swore I'd say something once I'd moved and my head was in a better place.. however yet again this failed as I was properly zoned out and it was all I could do to smile as I passed. Maybe next time; if there is one.

Utterly exhausted by the time I was passing the Isis on the river I stopped for a tonic; pushing it out to a pint given its great value and only latterly stopping to consider the amount of sugar it probably contained. I sat in the shady, expansive and largely deserted beer garden contemplating my failings as well-dressed youth trickled past to an event out the back.

An absolutely sublime evening that I'd have loved to have made more of, but it was all I could do to drag myself home at the end.. looks like I need a rest.

Opposite side - South Manchester. Over the Cat first then Buxton to Castelton (Dirtlow Rake). Return through Chapel/Whaley then over the brickworks.

Knee hurting yesterday whenever i tried to put any real power down so as mentioned in mundane news i am off the bike at least for today .
