Tales from today's commute....

Forecast to br wet this morning which is maybe why the roads were packed. The roads were bone dry though. Could have done with a car or two knowing their highway code and giving way to the crossing when they are turning. No biggie though I just had to moderate my speed as I could see they were never stopping. On a wide road though where I am always overtook today's driver didn't and sat behind me for nearly a mile before the opposing lane emptied completely.

Despite the rain forecast being wrong though the strong headwind forecast was right. Making that driver sitting behind even more patient 👍

23mph headwind apparently and here in the flat lands that's a hurricane.

Rain forecast all day so I opted for breakfast at home, a later start and more direct route.

Didn't seem too bad when I left; somewhat lamenting my choices.. however it quickly became apparant that the full-fat route into town and back would have been ill-advised so I settled into the shorter ride; the rain mostly manageable thanks to the moderate temperature and my pre-emptively-donned waterproofs.

Took another variation on the route taking in some known-but-not-in-a-commute-context roads, which may or may be have been superior to the usual ones.. at least it's a bit of variation if nowt else.

Slowly being consumed by manflu as the day drags intolerably while it seems the rain will still be in full swing come home time so it looks like another short one this evening.

The rain is well and truly here and it seems the tailwind I was hoping for vanished. In sharp contrasts to this morning too the roads were fairly quiet. I could have chilled out nicely but it was too cold and I kept the tempo up.

Chilly ride home but wind had dropped a bit. Climbing out of the valley on a farm track I could see another cyclist in front. As I rounded the curve, my lights were lighting up the road, so he pulled over thinking I was a car. Soon realised as I passed him I was a bike ! I had my dipped lights on with the one spot for distance, to the road lights up ! I did have to pull in further up the hill as a massive tractor with a "fork lift" on the front came thundering down with a massive bale on the front.

I did think it would have been rough, but it was fine. The bike isn't fast and being an old MTB, aero I can't get with arms and elbows. That's where the 'long gone' fixie was great.

I was surprised at just how cold and wet it was on the ride home at 6.30pm. I'd removed the bar mitts as well and my hands were so numb, could barely turn the key in the door when I got home.
