My last ever week commuting - I retire on Friday and we cycle to Spain on Saturday.

WFH tomorrow, leaving bash Thursday means only one full commute left.

I've been doing the route for the last 27 years, with a gap most of the time when kids were in nursery. Would estimate 50-100,000 miles all told, mainly on just two bikes.

Cold this morning and wet but not too bad this afternoon.

Usual extended route on the way back; tangibly cold but nicer when I'd warmed up.

Trivial points of note included out-dragging a delivery tw*t on an illegal ebike out of sheer bloody-mindedness; it running out of puff at maybe 20mph - unsurprisingly given it's enormous knobbly tyres.

Later on the tow path a rat ran across in front of me near an area that's always littered with bird seed; it was far enough ahead to be out of danger so I didn't brake; however I didn't have time to react to it's mate which did the same a split second afterwards and a lot closer - running into the side of my front wheel before jumping in the air, bouncing off my left shin and disappearing into the undergrowth.

I don't think it went under the wheel (which ironically it may have done had I slowed for the other one) and it moved fast enough afterwards to suggest it hadn't sustained significant damage; although if it had I'd have been unable to do anything about it.

Keep posting on this forum - you've helped me (and others too no doubt) particularly in the Repairs section.

A surprisingly busy ride in at this time in the morning. Im still on the gravel bike as the lbs couldn't source a new shifter for my road bike, its too old tech and wanted to charge me nearly £600 for a whole new groupset, shame as he's been really good when I have used him in the past. I've asked around and I can get 2nd hand 105 shifters of that era. I'll hopefully pick them up this weekend and fit them.

I could have done with the bike not being so clean. 5 stops down the line the train got busy and some idiot aggressively and without asking ripped it out of the velcro tie and shoved it out of the way so he could sit down 👎 I get off 2 stops down the line anyway as full sized bikes aren't allowed beyond St'Evenage anyway.

Congratulations and enjoy retirement! Glad to hear you're still planning on cycling. How far/long will the trip to spain be? sounds amazing.

Lovely spring day here, just wishing the cars would get out of the way.

Where are you from wafter? I don't think nowt is part of the Oxon vernacular!
It is now

Legend has it my paternal grandparents cycled through the night on a tandem from Derbyshire to escape my paternal great-grandparents so maybe there's a bit left

Congratulations and all the best for the future.

Absolutely - I'd have posted similar in response to @roubaixtuesday's post - an epic achievement and sounds like a retirement well-deserved. I suspect after all that time the last one will probably be quite a profound experience!

Not much of note this morning. Awoke early as usual, got up, elected to defer the hair wash so had a relaxed morning and managed to squeeze in the washing up and a bit of a tidy before departure.

Still overcast but markedly warmer this morning. Stopped for a third time to peruse the free gifts on the grass in front of the gorgeous mid-century house up the road that's evidently having a clear-out pre-move; having just sold for the fat end of a million quid... thankfully nothing I wanted.

A brisk ride into town thanks to the usual tailwind, traffic was pretty static so while I made better time than the cars it was punctuated by having to regularly duck in to wait for oncoming traffic.

Sausages didn't look so great this morning so I only had two, although they turned out to be far more crisp and delicious than anticpated.

Coming out of the depths of winter I'm now being reminded of how beneficial these morning rides are - not just from the perspective of being less-bad than the misery of taking the car, but also serving to really improve my often far-from-splendid mood after waking to the prospect of dragging my reluctant, dysfunctional corpse through another day

Decent ride and a quick one despite some headwinds. Damp under tyre and the sun was poking through. Got undercut at a set of traffic lights by a bloke on one of those fat bikes (low saddle ones where yoir knees stick out). Same geezer who did exactly the same thing last week.

So set off after him as he'd shot through as the lights changed. Slight tailwind so managed to catch him and passed him doing 23 mph. That's about as fast as I can get the MTB on knobblies to go. Managed to drop him before the heart attacked happened.

Do we find ourselves unwitting pioneers of a new sport of illegal-ebike-dickhead-baiting?

What a time to be alive!

Morning all.
A decent ride in for myself too. Traffic was pretty light for some reason, compared to normal. Only thing letting me down was that I seemed to hit every red light en route. Just one of those days.
11° when I left home at 7am this morning but felt colder. Warming up here nicely though.

Oh yes, it can be a jolly fun sport whilst keeping you honest. Particularly good fun those, that as Fossy describe, high handlebars, seat low and knees out. They deserve to be put in their place. ^_^

I was on the main road and noticed a car in the opposite carriageway had come to a standstill, indicating right to turn onto a side street.

I think the driver was waiting for me to pass to make his manoeuvre.

Unfortunately, a car already on that side street used this as a chance to make their right turn onto the main road - but without looking at me - look of shock on that driver's face when they eventually saw me.

Fortunately it was all at low speed, so I was able to take a wide berth around the car, while shaking my head!

Indeed - I think that was the type I had last night. Obviously not all of them are so easy to outrun, depending on the extent of their illegality..
