Tales from today's commute....

Typically it was quite bright and warm all day and was even still bright when I got on the train but I'm glad I looked at a weather radar and decided not to rush for the early train. It was right a few minutes up the line it started to grey and just after the station before mine where I had thought of getting off for the 18miles home as it was still dry, the heavens opened. The weather radar was right! The train fortunately  was held at a red light out side my station for 5mins during which time it was really heavy but by the time I got off it was just miserable (no longer torrential) for the 10 miles home.

whats all this it was "just drizzle" stuff  ok I hadnt planned to ride as the forecast had been heavy rain all day, but it was changing as time progressed and by morning rain was only forecast for rain for the morning.

at first glance by morning it did look like it was "just drizzling" but being cautious and my rain radar app which rarely picks up "just drizzle" was showing blobs of rain moving through, I broke out my wet weather jacket and winter storm tights which are slightly more waterproof than regular, which took a bit of time as its spring and Ive packed all my winter gear away for the year, its middle of May I havent even ridden in short sleeve top yet, whats going on with this weather. and packed some spare kit for the ride home, on the assumption I might get damp, but not soaked, but wanted something dry to wear.

anyway fully winter and "just drizzle" proofed up, I set off and found that "just drizzle" was more like "torrential drizzle", like having a shower head nozzle directed at your face for half an hour, except it was cold water.

and Im trying to avoid riding in the rut of the road, because thats where all the water is pooling, but I dont want to ride the left side of it because thats where all the puncture debris is hiding, and its flooding in parts too, but too far right and Im being treated to some right dangerous passes.

its raining, Ive got all my lights on, clearly the time to give me more space right, but no Im still being passed by drivers, who have no lights on, with barely any margin for error. oh and its gusty wind too which is blowing my front wheel in directions Im not that comfortable with.

make it to work, slightly later than normal, due to being slower in the conditions, the sunglasses probably werent helping the visibility, and the extra kit search. and I find normally my rain jacket is boil in the bag, but it wasnt this time, as Im guessing theres a hole in it or somehow the "just drizzle" worked its way in as my under jersey was soaked, my cycling shoes, that I had worn overshoes with too, were soaked (still drying even now btw) in fact literally everything I had was soaked, even my ruck sack which had been under the rain jacket, was soaked too.

at least the journey home was dry, windy but dry, though I was slight damp still from the morning. only thing of note I got passed by a police car as I approached a red light junction, just so he could sit infront of me at the red light, pointless overtake at that point, the next cyclist he overtook gave more room than most, but it wasnt 1.5m thats for sure.
