Actually, when I got my bike on the 13th, I took it completely apart and did what you did. xD

I scrubbed every bit of rust off, bought some new chain lube for it and applied that, oiled all the bolts after cleaning them off really well- the end result is that I'm now really, really attached to this bike! xD

I feel like I know it pretty well. I'm fortunate, I guess, in that instead of sitting in my mother's garden, it was sitting in her garage for like 6 or 7 years... It was still pretty iffy, though. I had a lot of fun cleaning it up- and I've still got all sorts of plans for what I'd like to do. (New brakes, I want a rack on the back, i want new tires.. Maybe a cycling computer?...)

Myself and hubbie spent a happy day in the garden yesterday working on the 1970s Raleigh Traveller that I was gifted. Not going too mad though as it's going to be used to get me to the train station and being locked up there so don't want it looking too good. So far rust off, new brake cables, chain degreased, stickers off and new white wall tyres. Looking good.

Yer this is a good way but waiting for the kettle to boil bors me lol I use a heat gun or a hair dryer (NOT MINE) don't heat up to much and it should pull away with all the glue if it's to hot the glue gets left behind!!

I had a blue one of those in the early 80s. Loved that bike but sold it to help pay for a white Scott bike (Scott's of Birmingham, not the other Scott's!) I did a frightening amount of touring on it in the Malverns, to say how heavy it was, dunno how I did it. I haven't seen one in years! I'm fixing up a 1993 Raleigh Venture ATM, I got for a few squid over the farm gate.

A friend of mine recenly found his brother's old Purgeot MTB behind the family shed. He asked me for advice as to getting it up and running again, unfortunately everything fell apart at the first hurdle as it had two D-locks on it - one through the front wheel and down tube, the other through the rear wheel and seat tube, both firmly rusted shut and no idea where the keys might be!
