Bromies are 16" wheel with a double fold so are ultra-compact, ie for packed commuter trains. If space is not at a premium, then std folders in 20" wheel , alu frame with a single hinge is a more economical way to go. Dahon Vitesse is a good example. Avoid cheaper copies in steel, they are a bugger to lift.
I have a dahon 26" wheel (Cadenza). If folds for occasional car carry but is quite bulky in folded form.
Belt drive (with hub gear) is clean and effective transmission for folders, esp ones with single rear stays rather than closed triangles (eg dahon Mu)
