talk to me about folders

Bromies are 16" wheel with a double fold so are ultra-compact, ie for packed commuter trains. If space is not at a premium, then std folders in 20" wheel , alu frame with a single hinge is a more economical way to go. Dahon Vitesse is a good example. Avoid cheaper copies in steel, they are a bugger to lift.
I have a dahon 26" wheel (Cadenza). If folds for occasional car carry but is quite bulky in folded form.

Belt drive (with hub gear) is clean and effective transmission for folders, esp ones with single rear stays rather than closed triangles (eg dahon Mu)

Might be worth noting that The Bike Shed have a Dahon Cadenza available at £449 at the moment, They only have a small, so it's dependent on your heights, but it's a decent big wheeled folding bike.

Thanks for all the replies, have just ordered carrera transits.
Bromptons would've been the first choice, but we just can't justify the expense for a very occasional ride.
Given the discount I get, transits were a good plan B.
I'll let you know how we get on
