Talking about the charts, what is your ACTUAL top ten?

You know how the top ten songs you pick today will almost certainly be different to some extent to the top ten you'd have picked last month, or lat year and will differ from what you'll be picking next year? Well there's an obvious way of seeing what your ACTUAl top ten is.

If you sync your MP3, your playlist will tell you how many plays each individual song has had since you put it on there. In this way, you will see what songs have stood your test of time.

Here's mine with the actual number of plays over the last 5-6 years.

1. No Lucifer. British Sea Power (66)
2. Woke up this morning. Alabama 3 (62)
3. Waving Flags. British Sea Power (50)
4. Remember Me. British Sea Power (47)
5. I'm Johnny Cash. Alabama 3 (46)
6. Extra Classic. Gregory Isaacs (42)
7. Couldn't Love you more. John Martyn (40)
8. Kennedy. Wedding Present (38)
9. Split single with Happy Lounge Labelmates. Half Man Half Biscuit (34)
10. Big Muff. John Martyn (32)

That surprised me a bit as if you do your personal top ten BEFORE you look to see what it ACTUALLY is, you may find a difference. I was certainly expecting more HMHB and the Wedding Present's 'No' and 'Brassneck' aren't there.

I think my top ten would be queered by the number of times I've skipped the tracks that my wife somehow managed to infect my iPod with. The soundtrack to the commitments can do one.

I don't listen to music on an mp3 player so I can't take part!

It's an interesting measure though, the songs you actually listen to most as opposed to those that you'd list as your favourite. Off the top of my head, I'd say 4 songs would currently be high on my 'listened to' list yet not on my favourites list;

- Beach Boys, 'California Girls' from the live in London album
- Al Green's version of 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand'
- Betty Boo 'Where Are You Baby'
- Peaches 'Talk To Me'

When I listened to my MP3 player, I just ran through all the songs on it in the order they were there. Now I have my phone for music, I just have it on shuffle, so I don't think it'll show up any preferences.

In no particular order...
In between days by the cure
That's Entertainment by the Jam
Forever in Blue jeans by Neil Diamond
Someone by Depeche mode
A question of lust by Depeche Mode
God gave rock and roll to you by wyld stallions (okay Kiss really)
Enola gay O.M.D
Whole again by Atomic Kitten (no really stop laughing I love it)
Let Me entertain you by Robbie
Cant take my eyes off you/where the streets have no name "mash up" by the pet shop boys

some controversial ones in there I know but in there they are!

On the subject of Depeche Mode My wife being younger and naive had not really heard of Depeche Mode until I dug out my copy of their concert album '101' and after it being played in the car for a few months she announced that Depeche Mode are touring and if I decide to go she wouldn't mind coming with me! result!!!! I've converted her!

Can't give the count but the first 10 in the Top 25 are:

Cheating Heart Attack - Dale Watson
Rock this Place - Fabulous Thunderbirds
Count me in - Jann Browne
You Lie - Dale Watson
Thousand Miles - Dwight Yoakam
Sting Me - Black Crowes
Walking the Dog - Bobby Earl Smith
What about you - James Intveld
Remember Me - James Intveld
Rear View Mirror - Bobby Earl Smith

The way I use my iTunes is in the car (which can be a lot) and with songs selected and on shuffle, so it isn't necessarily always the songs I'd select but they're all excellent tunes.

On the subject of Depeche Mode

It's a (to me) curious fact that I have more Depeche Mode singles than any other band. It's an almost embarrassing anomaly since I'd not call them indicative of my taste! 2nd most singles is The Fall - and they ARE more indicative!

The one thing putting me off seeing D.M is that I haven't really listened to their more recent stuff and I would be disappointed when they didn't perform the 101 concert playlist in its entirety.....
