i've removed two nests in the last couple of years and haven't been stung once. first one was in a load of cardboard in the back garden in a shed i was in part burning and throwing in the recycle bin (left over christmas stuff!) and they'd made a home in it, unsure of what to do then i was armed with two cans of killer and was happily taking out wops with both cans thinking i was some sort of gunslinger type.
anyway i can see them disappearing under a box so i pick up a broom and flip over the box.
at which point the nest shatters and the entire wasp legion take to the air in an angry buzz.
the cans were still falling to the ground as i ran hell for leather out the back gate and down the street, circled back and then went in the front door.
came back next day and they'd scarpered.
second nest was in the loft, i was actually planning on leaving it alone as they weren't bothering us until they managed to find a way through the ceiling light fixture and into the bathroom.
naturally this had to stop, the loft hatch thankfully is just outside the bathroom so i clambered up and there in the corner was the biggest bloody nest i have ever seen, it was like a beachball and attached to the felt. panic much? i did.
i resolved a plan, i got my 4 ft staff from my aikido kit and armed myself with 4 cans of that wasp nest spray got up on the ladder and went at the nest, the spray wasn't doing much except stripping some outer layers, i knew i had to really give it a bash, anyway, i managed to knock it off the felt and then went at it with the last of the spray and coated the lot.
next day checked and it was dead, but i felt a bit ill.
permethrin is the main ingredient in bug sprays and repellant and its actually harmful to humans. i'd been up in this enclosed space without breathing aperatus and gassed myself, i spent a week and a half like a limp noodle on the couch. fortunatly the tour was on so i watched it
