At our dive club, if you call those tanks, then you have to buy many bottles of beer to apologise. Same goes for "flippers" and "goggles".

I do love the "flippers" game. Long before I went diving you'd get "corrected" so now I am a diver I make a point of saying "flippers'. It's particularly satisfying on a dive boat where you have multiple tanks and so on, clearly planning a more serious dive than the would-be corrector who you can see biting their tongue.

Cylinders , bottles, tanks . All work for me .

But not oxygen tanks by a tired hack in the media . It’s air generally , oxygum. Be toxic below about 6 metres . Dependent on how edgy you want to go of course ...

Yup. There is a very popular author whose name is not dissimilar to "Hack Jiggins" whose bio claims he is a master scuba diver, but he constantly equips his protagonists with oxygen cylinders when they go diving.....

As an aside, we used to have an "all the gear, no idea" diver in the club who we managed to convince that he could buy EAN21 refills for his cylinders at specialist dive centres abroad...

By the way, I tried to check that myth about Italian tanks' gearboxes had any truth to it, but unfortunately it was too dark to see. I could not make out anything that looked like a gear lever anyway. I could have kicked myself later because I was carrying a torch in my bag.
Excuse me for the stupid question, but why don't you call the tanks flippers, and goggles tanks, flippers, and goggles?
Because it would just get stupid, and all the newbies would end up having to buy beer for the rest of the club members for the rest of their grandchildrens' lives
