Targets

It's coming to the end of the year and I know that there will be loads of people pushing for the targets that they set at the beginning of the year...I'm one of them! 68 miles to go until I hit 4000 miles for the year (I know it's not very far for most people but for me it'll be a decent total). It's been the thing that has got me out of bed and on the bike on many a wet and rainy morning and I've ticked off the miles as they've gone by. I've also given up many a time and said that I wasn't bothered whether I reached my target or not (only to get up early the next day to catch up!).

I did something similar last year but on a much smaller scale (I'd only just really started). I remember checking Strava and being chuffed for a second...telling my wife (who really couldn't give a toss) and then kind of thinking that I should be more ecstatic!

Is it something that you should just tick off and then get on with it???

congrats but no you should throw a big party invite me and then chuck in a free bike of choice in the party bag for each attendee!

Like you, I said that targets are not important but now, with only 10 days to go, it is an obsession. I should easily reach mine as I only need 11 miles to reach my 2000 miles. Will I set one for 2014? Most probably and with experience, I now know that summer time is crucial to get as many miles in as possible as winter is so unreliable. For me, doing the miles is now more important than the average speed.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
40-50 miles possible tomorrow, then another 25-30 on Tuesday, 25 or so next Saturday, 40 next Sunday, 20-30 on the 30th-31st - a total of 175 at best before the end of the year - and the reality is probably a lot less, given the weather. So I'm going to miss my 5000 target (again). I'll try again in 2014.

I love having a target to aim for. Started out with a 3000 mile one for this year but saw that off a long while ago.
I only recently (October) started riding with a club so nearly all my miles are commuting. It's having a target that has changed my mindset about cycling to/from work pretty much whatever the weather. I'll be setting a 2014 target but as of yet I don't know what it will be.

I like having a target. I find it helps with motivation. 4000 has been my aim for the last 2 years. It's roughly half commuting and half weekend rides. I haven't decided what target to set myself next year, but I'm now in a club so I should probably increase it!

I might make my target of 3000 need about 70 miles and only got 4 more commutes (weather permitting) totalling 52 so need a couple of short leisure rides.... fingers crossed we get the weather for it all

Set mine as 3000 for the year- my first cycling target, and I'm so nearly there, 9 days to go but still 92 miles :S
Problem is 2200 of my miles were commuting and I'm not in work any more this year so doubt in this weather with all the family down I will be able to get to my target- sob. Better luck next year.

My target in July (when I bought my bike) was a 2 stone lose before Xmas. I'd already lost just under a stone prior to buying the bike.
As it stands I've lost 3 stone since I got the bike and nearly 4 in total. I'm more than happy with my progress and feel so much better for it. Cycling has changed my life for the better.

I originally had a few different targets for 2013, most of which I won't achieve.

Having two small children, or germ breeders as I affectionately refer to them, can add a variable to ones ability to riding ability.

That said, I did manage to average 21mph on a couple of 25 mile rides and managed to average 20mph+ regularly, whereas I only topped an average of 20mph three times last year. So perhaps I haven't managed to go further, but I have got a little quicker.

Planning on joining a club next year, so we will see what the future holds.

My target this year was 3000miles, which I did by august, so changed it to 4000 miles, this year I've done 4600 miles. I would say about half the miles were commuting and the rest weekend rides.
Not sure about a target next year, was thinking 5000 miles.
If your target is 100 or 10,000 miles just as long as you enjoy cycling, that's the main thing:smile:
