I had an appointment at the hospital yesterdai. I was a bit early, so got a cup of tea and sat on a bench outside the entrance for a bit.
I saw a taxi pull up with a passenger (little old lady), he got out, opened the door then proceeded to escort her in to the hospital.
I thought how lovely that was, but reminded myself that if the little old lady had been on a bike he would probably have tried to kill her!

I would have wondered how much of a tip she'd given him to get service like that. Most of the taxi drivers near me would have had the door open and shoved you out before the taxi had even stopped!!

The taxi driver that was booked by the NHS to take me home after I was discharged from hospital after industrial scale antibiotic infusions to tackle a dose of cellulitis helped me into the taxi, out of the taxi and supported me as I hobbled along the drive to the front door. Couldn't fault him.

When I was on crutches all but one of the minicab drivers were spot on for service. Friendly, helpful, considerate and prompt. One was an arse. Couldn't care less, drove well over the speed limit, jumped two red lights, had me bashing against the door due to cornering like a rally car. As I was using the same cab firm for all the rides I phoned to complain afterwards.

From there onwards I only needed one more cab before I was able to hobble to the hospital on foot and I was cycling there shortly afterwards.

There are good and bad people in all walks of life, generally more good then bad.

I work 3 days a week as a taxi driver in a smallish town populated by a lot of retired people. If we didn't provide the above type of service, our boss would soon show us the door!
From the other side of the coin, I can tell you that there are SOME customers out there who push their luck somewhat. I am not a social worker or a home help, yet there are people who seem to regard it as part of my job to carry shopping up several flights of stairs for no extra reward. We get paid less than minimum wage as we are technically self employed. I only do it to supplement my pension, but I can fully understand why some taxi drivers aren't the industry leaders in customer service. Pay peanuts, get monkeys.

It was the taxi driver's mother.

One of my brothers is blind and he takes a taxi a few times in a week, and has done for years. He tends to use the same company so he's gotten to know many of the drivers. Often, though, he has to use other companies and the drivers are, 99 times out a hundred, decent sorts. In fact, when i'm out on the bike taxi drivers aren't usually a problem - they're predictable.
