Oh, yes, and you could take the opportunity to test your galactic velocipedes on this ride.

Great - thanks.

I was thinking about that some more yesterday.

I reckon York should spend its cycling money becoming like Groningen. Ever been there?

You can drive into Groningen, but you can't drive across it. To drive from one suburb to a neighbouring one, you have to drive out to an outer ring road, go around, and then back in again. The upshot is that almost no-one bothers - they walk, go by bike or go by bus.

Yes, it was radical when Groningen did it, but it works now, economically as well as just for transport reasons. I've been there and it works. In fact, driving from one part to another isn't so bad, because so few people are driving it - they're all on bikes. (I was working, and had to drive to return a rental car and various bits of kit).

York has an outer ring road, and it's flat. So why not put a rising bollard at Walmgat Bar, Peasholme Green, Monk Bar, Bootham Bar, Leeman Road, Micklegate Bar, Bishopthorpe Road and Fishergate? Then close off the inner ring road between those points.

Vehicles with widgets that get them through the current rising bollard at Stonebow (buses, taxis, ambulances etc) and bikes, could of course use the inner ring road and the city centre unimpeded. Cars could reach the inner ring, but go no further without going out to the outer ring and back in - just like in Groningen. Since York Council has provided Park & Rides at most of the outer ring road nodes anyway, why does anyone need to drive through York?

Far be it from me to diss your marvellous machine, but I don't like the colour in that pic.

Galaxies should be British Racing Green.

I agree, it's a rather strange colour. I definitely wouldn't describe it as bronze.
