Hmm. Living in that direction, I have to say that there is no really good route out of the city that way. The Haxby road has some on-road cycle lanes, some of them almost of a sensible width. The Strensall road is just awful - not wide enough for cars to overtake when there's oncoming traffic, but busy enough that they have to wait for gaps. Every time I go that way, at least one driver takes a chance.

The next radial road out of York (working round clockwise) is the A64. You need a strong nerve to use that one. Unfortunately, I'm forced to use it almost every day.

There's a nice footpath up the Foss from Yearsley Grove all the way out to Towthorpe. Much of it is surfaced. It goes under the A64, so no need to cross. If York Counciil had any imagination, they'd upgrade it to bridleway and surface it for its whole length - there are loads of commuters cycle from Strensall to York every day.

Of course, some of them might take the train, if the Council's plan to re-open Strensall Station ever got anywhere...

I found myself in Poppleton a few months ago at about 5.30 pm. Suddenly, the streets there were full of people in office clothes, walking home (the people, not the clothes, although the the two were attached to each other...). There was almost no traffic, though. They'd just got off a train - the Harrogate line runs through Poppleton.

Haxby, Wiggy, Strensall, Flaxton, Barton-le-Willows, Huttons Ambo and loads more villages could be like that, if those stations could be re-opened. Commuter villages, but largely car-free ones, whose inhabitants talk to each other on their way to the station or on the train, rather than sterile dormitories that are evacuated by single-occupant cars every day.

What is the use of a local branch line if you can't actually get on the trains except at one or two points?

Yes. Tea would be nice.

There there....

I'm thinking I should use the new commute to build in some extra mileage, taking the pretty way home perhaps. I'm just not sure I can think of a pretty way, out that side of the city. Anyway, I always want to get home to my dinner...

I don't think there is a nice way to cycle out there. Once you get past Wigginton, the roads aren't too bad if you get off the main road. There are some nice quiet lanes to pootle around on.

Chamomile? Something nice and calming?

Yeah, I thought Wigginton and Haxby looked nice - villagey, but not so far out of town. I could have found a better way out there, but I was experimenting. The roundabout at the ring road/Wiggy road is a classic - off road cycle lane snippets at each sour, to let you cross the road. No off road cycle path, or even on-road lane, leading to them, just off road crossings and then back on the road in every direction. Pointless! I only took the off road bit thinking it might lead to a nice path by the road, but no... And saw the sign for Helmsley - maybe give that a go next time. Should head out Howden again some time. The Deli/cafe there does a wicked cheese platter!

For lunch today, I had noodles in cupasoup sauce, a Jaffa cake and some cheese.....

Tea, anyone?

Mmmm. I'll take a cup, thanks. I'd moved to Sheffield before they "upgraded" that roundabout by making it bigger, adding extra junctions and basically making it really dangerous to navigate by bike. It used to be just a standard 4 exit thing, then they decided to insert that bizarre little road to the Shopping bit (the one with the Tesco) and monkey around with all the angles. It's very odd now.

I'm not sure there is a pretty way to Clifton Moor. It's an inherently ugly place. (Did you know it started out as a wartime airfield? - hence Amy Johnson Way, Auster Road, Lysander Close, Bleriot Way and so on).

The good thing about it is that, come five o'clock, it becomes one big car park. Cycling through that can be quite enjoyable in a smug, I'm allright Jack sort of way.

I get to spend three days on a course there every couple of years. Some of my fellow-villagers work there. They go by car. I cycle and get home before them - and that's taking into account the six miles or so of unclogged roads...

Although, the second is never quite as good as the first, is it?

I find that true of Tea, as well.

Or is that heresy on this thread?

I need to wash my hands, I've fettled three bikes today and I'm a bit filthy.

You Yorkies have got me missing the North.
Plus my Lady has gone home to visit her family in Saltburn for a few days.
God I loath London.

If it's one of your teas, tdr1nka, I'll struggle to finish the first, never mind enjoy the second...

It's not the quality, it's the quantity.

You see, folks, tdr1nka likes to use a mug THIS big....

You can always get on a train and join us this weekend.

I seem to recall I owe you a little hispotality.

B*gg*r! I'm on Dad duty or running Dr. Bike in Greenwhich for Hilldodger until the end of June.

But I have been threatening to come and visit the York posse for a while now, a supreme effort will be made this summer!;)

*Bloody Hell! This year is flying past already!!*

Ah, I wondered about the aeronautical theme. I've noticed there's an Audax Road, which would be an ideal location for photos, assuming we covered that sort of bike.

I rode out there regularly for a couple of months, a few years back, to measure bones at YAT for the PhD. Back then I went via Water Lane, but I think Rawcliffe Lane is a better bet, having tried it on Sunday. I shall enjoy beating the traffic jams anyway.

Tdr1nka, how did you get yourself tangled up with a reprobate like Hilldodger? And yes, you must make the effort. Pity you'll be busy over York Rally Weekend I guess... Mind you, I'm generally tied up on the Velo Vision stand all weekend. Not literally, you understand. Not sure if that would be an added incentive to visit the stand or not!

Oh and before I go...

Spoke to my sister last night. When I sent the knitted Makka Pakka for Oli, I also sent a little book I'd found in a farmshop, one of a series set on a farn, and this one about a barn on fire (knowing as I did that Oli likes nee-naws). Apparently it has become a required ritual to have this read to him at breakfast every day! And of course he has to point out everything in the pictures he can name - tractor, hammer, nee-naw, shower (the firemen's hose) and all the little ducks (there's one hidden on every page). I gather it's driving her barmy, esp on Mondays when she has to get him to nursery and herself to work....

And he can do numbers. 1,2,3,4,6,8,9. At the moment they are a bit randomly applied, like he was with colours at first. "What colour is this Oli?" "Bluuuuue" "No, what's the other colour? "Lellow!" Still, he's obviously a genius.

Have I mentioned how much I adore him?

Anyway, off home for dinner. Tuna on pasta tonight...

It is just so quiet over here, I would never recommend any one to move here.;)

I keep arguing with my neighbours. If the bin men leave some rubbish on the road or pavement, I have had two arguments with neighbours in the past two years, about who is going to pick it up. I have to say it should be me, as it is on my side of the road, and they might say it should be them who picks it up, as they recognise it as their rubbish.

And as for noisy dogs. Next door has a very large dog, and so does the house opposite, but you would never know.

Time for tea? while I see if Fantasy Giro has been up-dated, one of my team was second today.
