What does it look like as it goes past? Is it just a bright light travelling faster than the stars? (offers apologies for silly question)

It looks like a very bright planet, but moving quite rapidly. It crossed about 1/4 of the visible sky in around 5 minutes. Clearly visible even in a well-lit area (ie the road near my house).
What you see is sunlight reflecting off it - probably off the solar panels, mostly.

If I stand in the garden and look West, there is not much light polution at all. As I understand the link, it will travel approx west to south west, have I got that right. The brain box is still very fuzzy with this infection.

Looks like the space station will be quite low in the sky, I'll have to go out and look for it. Oh, and it doesn't rise until after I'm normally in bed... Saturday looks like a better bet.

Tea anyone?

Yes - pretty much all satellites appear to be south (from us in the Northern hemisphere), and go from west to east. Some (Astra etc that transmit TV) appear to stay still, but they're hard to see, because they're further away. The ISS is about 200 miles up or so, Astra is around 22 000 miles up.
