On a serious note Doctor are you still intending to hand in your notice without a written offer from the New Job? From the length of time they took to decide, you might think that they have checked references etc.
BUT what if they decide that they do not want you to start for a month or so? I would like to suggest that you wait until you have a firm offer, and then try to juggle the dates so that you get some time between jobs to go to Ireland. Have you got any leave owing to you so that you can shorten the amount of notice you give?

Speicher, I've had a written offer yesterday, so I have handed my notice in. If I get a few weeks, or even a month or two in between, that won't be a problem. We're not hugely dependent on my salary. We'll be able to head off for a long European tour or something! I know they can't have taken up one of the character references, because the chappy in question is in the Alps at the moment. When I said I wouldn't necessarily wait to get a written offer, I knew HR were preparing it at that time.
