Wafflycat, sit down and here is your tea. I was sorry to hear your sad news this morning, but as you said, from a selfish POV was kinder on you. I have nursed many a sick animal over time it is heartbreaking ;)

Tea. Needed. Cathode is dead (see other thread) and I've just wrapped her poor body in newspaper and then into a bag, into the bin. And undignified send-off, the approved way of doing it. Both Vernon & Nathan offered to deal with Cathode's disposal for me, but she was my girl, so I had to do it. From an entirely selfish POV, I'm glad that when I found her she was gone as opposed to being in agony and me having to disptach her. I know the theory of a swift dispatch and I am very glad I have not had to put that into practise.

Oh dear sorry, Wafflycat, will the vet do a post-mortem to find out if its anything the other chickens can get? Best to disinfect everything me thinks on the safe side.

At least you gave her a better life than she had in the battery farm.

No vet involved, Gromit. The henhouse is cleaned daily anyway, and I always give the girls the once over daily too. Heck, I even check the "non-edible offerings" daily to make sure they are good & healthy with no signs of nasties & disease. You can tell a lot about a hen from those "non-edible offerings" The other Laydeez are looking & acting as fit as fiddles, but I will be keeping a very close eye on them. The thing with ex-batts is that the stress of their early lives can catch up with them so that they may expire much earlier than a hen that's been free-range for its entire life.So in a way it's not an entirely unexpected thing.

Everything done then. Poor chuck.

The organic farm I use to work on wasn't very good a cleaning their 15 chickens out, told them several times that they needed to clean the house out more than once a week. To be honest I wouldn't like to sleep in a weeks worth of my own s**t, so why do hens. Also told them that they needed better ventilation and draft proofing too.

Anyway at least the rest of your girls have a decent home.

Sorry to hear about Cathode, Waffles, but I'm sure she had a happy 'retirement' with you.

Will you be getting another, or would that upset the pecking order?

I've finally got organised and put up a bit of string to peg my Xmas cards to, normally they just get in the way on every flat surface in the room.

AND I've thought of something to ask my sister to get me for Xmas, hoorah! She said if I didn't come up with an idea, I'd get bath cubes or a subscription to Tractor Monthly.

It was with some trepidation I ventured out to the henhouse this morning. But I was greeted by thre very alive Laydeez bouncing up and down and clucking excitedly at the thought of their nice warm breakfast. I missed that fourth hen though.

I'll wait a while, to see how it goes with the current three Laydeez, and possibly sometime in 210 get a hen or two to add to Wafflycat's Bide-a-Wee Retirement Home For Ex-Batts.
