"It depends on parameters of the role(s)" is the gist of the reply I received about the possible vacancies.

Thank you Arch, TheDoctor and DCLane for reassuring me that it would be usual to be polite and/or friendly in your response. It would seem that the recipient of the information is not capable of either mode of response.

If someone offers me a doughnut, I don't demand to know what sort of jam is in it!!

I am so glad you agree. She really is a pompous twerp. Just how useful is a degree in Maritime History when you live near Stratford on Avon? She does not want to take a "junior" post cos she has a Post Graduate whatjamacallit in something or other, but has zilch, nada, nothing, nowt in the way of experience.

Well, the Avon is navigable as far up as Stratford...

I was under the impression that Maritime was pertaining to open sea.

If that's her sort of response, then she's probably not making the effort needed to get a decent job.

My suggestion would be that she needs to offer herself as an intern to organisations she'd like to work for/be associated with.

But I'm guessing that'd be too hard for her as well

I think what would be too hard for her, not just because of her reply to me, but because of her track record, would be being polite and friendly (in moderation) at an interview.

She has had a few jobs, but seems to have been a full-time student since last century. Being 29 years old, but only having worked for about 18 months total in three different jobs, does not inspire confidence from any perspective employers' point of view. I am guessing here of course.

True. I've had the same conversation with two groups of my students today.

The difficulty she is in is that it's a very competitive market if she's looking at heritage stuff. Add to that an ever-increasing group of younger and more enthusiastic graduates who will be happy to do an internship to gain the experience.
