oh yes, er umm..... good point Potsy. Perhaps I should just get one that would fit me now, on the basis that on the new slimmer me, it would be loose enough for a tee shirt or a vest and shirt underneath.

What is they reckon? one stone lost is two dress sizes? ;) yes, I know you do not wear dresses have not seen you in a dress.

If you want a good pair of walking boots, may I suggest you go to a proper shop that sells boots etc. They will have a pretend slopey section of wood to emulate walking downhill. The assistant, if they know what they are doing, will help you choose the right size. Some brands are narrow in the foot compare to other brands. So if the length is right, then they can find you the right brand for the right width. I do not think you will find that assistants in Milletts are very skilled in that arena.

The fit of boots is so important. Like bikes, you will not do well with boots that are a poor fit. Is Longers in your part of the world to recommend a boot shop?

Trouble is you end up like me with half a wardrobe full of undersized clothes that I bought for future slimmer me

How about if you try the Weight Watchers eating plan on-line? I have membership that allows me to attend a meeting once a week, and also access to all the information on-line.

For instance if you had a white bagel with butter and marmelade, with a milky coffee, that is as many calories as two, or even three slices of bacon, two poached eggs, with mushrooms, with fruit etc. It is sensible, not gimicky, and no, you are not expected to survive on lettuce and cabbage soup.

Tbh Speich I just need to cut down my portion size really, and stop snacking between meals.
Once I get back cycling that's the exercise sorted, hopefully putting my name down for some CC rides will help with the motivation.

As for the boots, I would like some Gore-tex lined ones that will be comfy to wear all day, not really planning on any hill walking. Waterproof and with decent grip is the main thing.
Is Longers into hill walking?

That would probably work Potsy. It is the snacks, like biscuits and crisps and chocolate that are very heavy laden in calories. Could be an idea to reduce the pastry etc as well. ;) With more exercise added in. Cheese also has about three million calories.

Boots to wear all day, in that case Milletts would be ok. For general walking on the flat, and being comfy all day, I like Cotton Traders sturdy shoes, not quite a boot. I think Longers does long walks, not definite about that.

I prefer fabric or softer leather boots, those look like they need a lot of breaking in. They might also be very heavy.
I also like Salomon shoes and boots. The fit is the most important. I forgot that Milletts would have a website.

How about these then? They are the other pair that I liked and they are almost half the price.

For active days, and not climbing high mountains, they would probably be much more comfortable and lighter. As for waterproof, not sure. Probably water-resistant.

I am not the best person to give advice on boots. Lots of people on this forum do serious walking, and might be able to offer much better advice than I can. When I buy boots I rely heavily on the advice from Landmark in Broadway.

If you look on Landmark's website here

http://www.landmarkstores.com/allde...egade-Mid-GTX-Walking-Boot-From-Landmark.aspx

it gives more details than the Milletts website about what the different styles etc are suitable for. For instance the ones above are described as water-repellant, rather than water proof. Then look at their description of the Brasher Antuco nubuck for comparison, or the Scarpa Men's ranger. Hope this helps.

These on the top row left, are described as suitable for everything below the snow line. ;) http://www.landmarkstores.com/Departments/OUTDOOR/Outdoor-Footwear/Mens-Walking-Boots.aspx
