I'm going to have a second attempt at blagging tea from my tame farmer. Just debating whether it's worth brewing up now as well...

That's kind - just got back from doing 3 hrs in Dereham. In Norwich, the old Whittard's shop next to a main Castle Mall entrance is being used as a base for thr Poppy Appeal.

In Norwich, the old Whittard's shop next to a main Castle Mall entrance is being used as a base for thr Poppy Appeal.

I walked past it earlier today; looked like someone standing outside having a crafty smoke, was wearing one of your chooks on his head, so fluffy was his headware adorned with feathers!

I bought a poppy in Loddon just before I caught the bus into Norwich and the petal (red) bit must have fallen off straight away, as I only had the stalk on (oo er) show!

I'll get another one tomorrow: off to UEA for a wet lunch.

Davyo, if are staying up late tonight to 11pm, and can get BBC4, you could watch Wallender. The subtitles in English always seem to use less words than those spoken in Swedish. It still makes sense tho'. You would be able to tell if it is a shorter version or just sounds like it. It would be interesting to know what you thought.

I think with most translated films or TV programmes, there is a limit as to how much can be put down in the sub-titles!

Often for speed and penny-pinching, the cheaper option is the norm, unfortunately.

I'll try and stay awake long enough to offer my (humble) opinion of whether the translation is good or otherwise!

As an aside, Stieg Larsson's trilogy of books have taken the world by storm, but even two of the titles haven't been translated as I would have liked! The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest should be, respectively, 'Men Who Hate Women' and 'The Blowing-up of the Luftslottet (lit. The Air Palace - I don't know if it has a reference to a place or building).

Even with my limited (very limited) knowledge of Swedish, I have noticed a discrepancy in the translation of the titles. IIRC Mastermind became Village Idiot. Yes, there was a "village idiot" in the programme, but that was not the centre of the plot, as it were. (Without giving too much away in case people watch it).

I was starving when I got in, so instead of resorting to snacks I got on and cooked dinner (chilli) straightaway, a bit earlier than normal.

It didn't quite work, I snacked as I cooked! But part of my snacking was ingredients, so I guess that made dinner that tiny bit smaller....
