It has got Penelope Cruz in it, so I do not think it is all that High Brow.

Although, compared to "Up" and "Christmas Carol", you might have a point.

There's a bit in the Jeeves and Wooster books where Bertie mentions having gone to see some Gilbert and Sullivan, but he thought it a bit highbrow.

One would expect no less of the perfect gentleman's personal gentleman.
Better than adopting the shifty, hangdog look that announces an Englishman who is about to speak French.

What have you done to said car? Or is it the once-a-year-whether-it-needs-it-or-not fettle and oil change?

Have a brew before, at least *passes mug*

Morning all; kettle's on.

We went to a lecture last night on the subject of "whose music is it anyway". A guy from Radio 3 spoke at lightning pace for an hour and I had to concentrate very hard to keep up.

His conclusion was that we should go back to having well-funded local authority music services, providing free one-to-one instrumental tuition in schools. That's what I had, and it never done me no harm, so I agree with that. (Vested interest: York music service has been known to employ me to teach music to kids, God help 'em..)

Tonight we're off to see "The Men Who Stare at Goats". Tomorrow night, it's the Ian Macmillan Orchestra at the glittering palace of the arts that is Terrington Village Hall.

It's just a whirl here. (What day is it again?)

Mornings again... back from dropping herman The German off with Dr. Bobby The Car Guru. There is what sounds like a front wheel bearing on the point of dying if not already dead. Plus Herman is requiring of a service to keep him in peak condition. The service may not get done today but the other problem will.

Now, where's that brew? Oh ta, there it is.

Uggbre...

The Sewing Machine Saga.

MrWC was going to get me a new sewing machine as my forthcoming birthday/Christmas pressie. I do enjoy a bit of sewing now and again and use a machine for odds & sods - such as the cushion covers I did the other day & I'm making a rather large curtain at the moment.

So we looked about on the Interwebbie and decided on machine. Ordered it. No probelms with order - legit site, secure ordering yadda, yadda. All as done many, many times before from many different online retailers with no hassle.

The a wee while later I was browsing sewing sites. And I came across feedback of the retailer I'd ordered from. Oh dear. I went sick to the pit of my stomach. The feedback was appalling. In several ways. This is the first time I've been so concerned buying online. The chances of me being a satisfied customer came across as being vanishingly slim.

So I checked what the distance selling regs cover and how to go about cancelling & anticipating problems - to be sure of what to do.

So - email sent to company cancelling order (as you can do at any time before delivery & you have a seven day cooling-off period post delivery), noting on it that it was also going by recorded delivery.. (all less than 24hrs after the order made and no contact from company to say item already dispatched).

MrWC contacted the bank this morning. The company has taken the payment for the machine not once, but twice.

So MrWC has phoned the company. He has been told that they will rectify the error immediately and refund both amounts in full - immediately.

So we shall see if this happens. Will give the banking system a wee while to work through and then contact the bank again to see if the refund has been made. I hope it has but am preparing to hear that it hasn't..

How can I judge when it is "practically dark"?

I reckon that's any clothing that doesn't show up the grease marks from any fettling session.

Hmmm.... more developments..

Phone call from the company about the sewing machine.

'Sorry madam, the machine has already been sent out. Once you get it, send it back and we'll make a refund then'

Me. Oh, that's not what we were told this morning. Spoke to *** at your company and he said full refunds to be made immediately.

'We won't be making any refund until we get the machine back'

Me - we asked about the dispatch this morning and were not told it it been sent (basically it hasn't been, I'm about certain) and that full refund to be made immediately.

'Just hold on a moment'

a short break

'I've got a cross over here and have checked - yes full refunds to be made immediately and will take two working days to show in your bank'

So we shall see..

Now... having read the adverse comments about said organisation, it seems this is following a pattern. Call to say machine already dispatched. Machines do not arrive... Delay and delay before refunds go through and when they do, expect to find less than the full amount as a deduction has been made for 'delivery' - that delivery that never actually happened.

Now it may be that it all turns out ok.

Now if the machine turns up hvving already been dispatched - and I seriously doubt that it has - I'll be happy to accept it and pay for it. But the signs are not good.
