That's a shame, was hoping for some company at the front of the hill climbs
I'll just stay back and keep Colinj from falling behind too much instead

My hill climbing at the moment is shoot but I am gradually building my strength back up to what it was last year so I should be in attack all hills mode ready for the SITD touch wood.

I am just treading water mileage wise and forcing myself to go out until cold weather buggers off and I can get some decent mileage in.

To be honest I dont know how colinj does it I need to constantly keep up my hill work on a weeky basis otherwise after a month or so I just lose all the strength in my legs, which isnt good living here because everywhere around here involves going up a hill of some sort and usually a large one.

I know, my trouble is I do a flat 20 miles commute 4 or 5 days a week.
Hills are not natural for me, they were such a shock the first time I rode the 'Trawden' route
Nearly finished me off, did the same ride later in the year much better.

Well you need to practise hills more to build up the strength in your legs, at the moment I can barely get up any steep hills coz I am only doing short rides my feet just dont like the cold so I can only do a max of 30 miles in this weather before my feet go numb and that is with warm wolly socks and Gortex boots on.

In the summer I will aim to try to do my evening hilly ride 2 - 3 times a week and that is at least 35 miles of some of the steepest climbs in the local area, sometimes further depending on how light it stays, then at least 70 - 100 miles on either sat or sunday as long as life doent get in the way like it did last year.

I still remember walking up the Roman road on the way back to HB, first two rides there was no way I was riding it, 3rd time I made it all the way up in bottom gear 3mph and have done it twice since and didn't think of walking :training:

There is a hill going out of patley bridge I sometimes go up and there is a stretch of about 200 yards where I always seem to run out of oxygen and my lungs try to climb out of my mouth so I either have to stop and rest or walk the 200 yards.

It is nearly vertical in places but it is a challange to get up it, last time I did it as part of a 100 mile ride and I got a standing ovation from a couple who were parked at the top

:cuppa: for Phil and a forklift truck for Potsy

There's one hill round here that's particularly demoralising - it flattens out as you reach every corner so you think you've done it, only to have a nasty shock waiting for you. I've only climbed it the once but that involved a lot of stopping to catch my breath and then standing with all my weight on one pedal just to get moving again. I did it, though. Without walking. :wahhey:

The trouble with chatting like this with people from all over the shop is that you never know if your hills match up to theirs. One cyclist's mountain being another's insignificant incline and all that.

Thats ok its not a knob measuring contest its just a personal thing, as long as you are happy with what you can do thats all that matters.

There is always someone fitter and faster than you.
