No, sorry, I've always heard "Feed a cold, starve a fever", and taken it at face value. Although I can see how it could be interpreted the other way. I think part of it is that when you have a fever your appetite is suppressed anyway.
New Scientist seems to think it's right, anyway....

I did something I don't normally do today. I gave some money to a homeless young girl. I don't know why I did it, maybe it was because she was crying whilst talking to a lady. It so easily could have been me at her age, having no one to turn to for help.
I do hope she finds some help somewhere.
